1300 miles to "wow"
Two days and 1300 miles later we have made it to collegiate mountain bike nationals. We rolled into Angel Fire, New Mexico this evening and were greeted by a herd of Elk crossing the road! We actually had to wait until several crossed the main road as they held up traffic. We couldn't get our cameras out fast enough to take shots up close, but we'll be better prepared next time.
It's now our tradition to start a trip to collegiate nationals by eating breakfast at Bread & Company on West End. Their omelets are the best way to begin any road trip, but as for me I hit the waffle with peanut butter spread on top. After making myself a soy mocha we hit I-40 West for the next 1200 miles before turning right to go north to our desitation.
I am a huge fan of text messages. It's short, sweet and to the point. If you know me and want to get a quick reply then text me first, otherwise, you're in line with everyone else. I was able to have some critical information text'd to me as I traveled. You know, like where is the next Starbucks in Fort Smith, Oklahoma City, Amarillo, etc! This helped out several times along the route.
I had never driven past Fort Smith towards Oklahoma City, but to OK City it wasn't that bad of a drive. After staying the night in OK City we made the final journey today, and from there to here it's a brutal wind that'll whip you around. Once you get past Amarillo you're basically driving uphill the entire time, a false flat, and you can see for what looks like 10 to 20 miles around you.
Before reaching Angel Fire Resort we had to wind our way through and up highway 434. There were some narrow roads that I hope we go back down before any snow falls. If so, we'll be waiting for some melting before chancing it while pulling a trailer. Here's the view as we drive up to our ski resort condo.
Our condo at the resort deserves it's own blog and video. Our team has reached a new benchmark for luxury, and it's no joke how sweet we've got it this week. More on that later.....
