Weekly roundup

As I sit here typing it's 30 minutes from midnight leading into Friday morning. Yeah, I should be in bed already but I have been adding some diaries to the website. Before that I took some time for myself to enjoy a great meal, great wine and ended it with, you guessed it, a soy mocha. I even played Santa in September by giving away a huge chocolate cake to an unsuspecting person. I really do enjoy fattening up others!

Here goes the roundup.....

Check out the latest diaries from regular Dustin Greer and local bike shop owner Kerry Roberts. Dustin has been doing his usual thing tearing up mountain bike races, but a big congrats goes out to him for winning his third TBRA jersey! Kerry offers up an outstanding guest diary from his trip to the Milan International Cycling Show 2006. He and his wife had an incredible trip across Europe and rubbed elbows with a lot of important industry folks during the show.

Kerry also provided a diary titled "Where was my bike made?" that I'll post in a few days. You will really enjoy reading that list because it covers just about every manufacturer you can think of. Kerry doesn't only tell where a bike was made, but in many cases offers up some related stories.

This Friday is the last Friday of September, which of course means Critical Mass Nashville! The ride leaves from Dragon Park in Hillsboro Village at 5:30 PM. Everyone begins meeting at 5:00 PM under the picnic pavilion and then rolls out on time.

Check out the latest news on TBRA regarding the announcement of a new elite development team here in Tennessee. The guys at TriStar and Kingdom Sports are joining forces to develop athletes with aspirations to compete at the highest level in the sport.

Go HERE to read the press release from TriStar and Kingdom Sports.

This a huge positive development for the future of cycling here in Tennessee. From what I understand there's significant funding along with commitments from Tennessee's most talented young riders. Add those two aspects to the fact that the leaders of the venture are committed, respected, and expertly experienced to handle such an endeavor. I am excited to see this come together and look forward to watching it progress. Thank you to all the key people who put this together!

This weekend marks the end of the Georgia Cup Series with the Buckhead Gran Prix. I am driving down Friday evening for what will be my next-to-last race weekend of 2006. I'll hit the circuit race around the Maxxis headquarters on Saturday, and then the criterium in the heart of Buckhead on Sunday. The crit on Sunday boasts a $10,000 payout for the Pro 1/2 event! Will I be in the money?

What do you think of the video blogging? You owe it to yourself to watch all the segments of my interview with Austin Bauman of the Rally Foundation. You will be amazed at how much money he and Tom raised during their 4400 mile bike ride! I threw in the video of race action at Lees-McRae College for good measure since it was my first try at shooting video. My "here comes the slackers" comment got a good laugh from the CU boys, but had I known it was them coming around the trees I'd have likely not inserted my foot in my mouth!

Police seek suspect in fatal hit-and-run - I never heard about this when it happened during the Labor Day weekend, but it's a shame they haven't caught the suspects.

NYC Mulls Ban on Trans Fats in Eateries - Wow, what's next? Have you noticed that several places have posted signs saying you won't be served if you're talking on your cell phone? Yeah, I'm down for that.

Nats' train derails on way home from N.Y.; none hurt - It wasn't just the train that derailed, but the Nats' season went off the tracks long ago. Believe me, I have thought about this scenario as I've been riding the Music City Star to work. For the record, NashvilleCyclist.com does NOT have contingency plans to replace its President/CEO if a tragic accident took place. Heck, there's not even an organizational chart or mission statement! How have we made it this far? Smoke and mirrors baby!

I went through some of my old interviews and editorials earlier tonight. That's an area I realize that's been neglected, but one stood out that I'll have to repost as a blog. It's one I wrote on 10/2/2004 about Tyler Hamilton and his positive blood doping. Here we are two years later in the same circumstance, and everything I wrote is applicable to the Floyd Landis test result. I'll post that over the weekend, or you can go to www.NashvilleCyclist.com and click on the "Interviews" section. Before you ask, no, I cannot simply provide the link here because it just won't work. It's a technical glitch with how my site is setup, but when we update the infrastructure we'll eliminate that problem.
