Best medicine = Laughter
This morning I had the TV on in the background as I put down some Jittery Joe's Coffee and breakfast. I wasn't paying attention until this from ABC, "No Joke: Laughter Yoga Stretches Into OC."
Being someone into learning as much as possible about improving my yoga abilities I had to look it up online. I had never heard of laughter yoga, but I am slightly familiar with deep breathing exercises that some yoga instructors are in favor of. I have never been interested in the intense breathing exercises, but Laughter Yoga has a lot of health benefits cyclists want to hear most - improved oxygen supply!
Read what the experts say about improving your oxygen supply throughout the body:
"Deep breathing techniques which increase oxygen to the cell are the most important factors in living a disease free and energetic life... Remember. Where cells get enough oxygen, cancer will not, cannot occur." --Dr. Otto Warburg, President, Institute of Cell Physiology, Nobel Prize Winner (Dr. Warburg is the only person to ever win the Nobel Prize twice in medicine and he was nominated for a third.)
"Breathing correctly is the key to better fitness, muscle strength, stamina, and athletic endurance." --Dr. Michael Yessis, Phd., President Sports Training Institute, Fitness Writer - Muscle and Fitness Magazine
There's even a World Laughter Day, now held on the first Sunday of May each year.
I can see where laughter could become a new racing strategy. Suppose you are rolling along in the peloton and get alongside one of that day's potential winners. Maybe even have one other teammate with you, and then strike up some casual conversation with the likely winner. Just start laughing for NO reason. Keep laughing and laughing, and sooner or later the after-effect will be everyone else will start laughing.
Meanwhile you had another teammate at the front waiting for all the laughter to start. Boom, attack! Go like a banshee and don't look back. Imagine having to go from a laughing barrel to a full bore sprint to chase. I can hear the confused "what tha' hell" comments now. Maybe you get caught and then laugh even more.
Lord knows that cyclists should laugh more anyways. Lighten up Francis!

Hi--Just got back from California after a five day laughteryoga class with Dr. Kataria. We plan to start a free class next Thursday Oct. 18th at Back In Touch Wellness at 7:30am on 2817 West End.
You are certainly invited--or do you have a class already?
Susan and Luther Ludwig
