Lost & found
It's kind of hard to sit inside and blog when it's about 70 degrees outside in late November! Like you all I rode a good bit on Thursday through Sunday to take advantage of the beautiful warmth of the sun. Us natives know this is par for the course this time of year, but if you give it just a few days it'll be back down to the mid 40s. Oh wait, just look HERE and see next Saturday for a dose of winter reality
Does anyone check out Craigslist like I do? Some unfortunate local soul says "My Bike Was Stolen." No word on whether or not it was found, but if you saw it you'd remember the unique decorations.
For you spaghetti lovers combine these words to water your mouth; spaghetti, baked, casserole, squash, honey ginger and caramelized. If all that gets you excited then check out "Fall for spaghetti squash" from The Tennessean. I didn't know there was a variation of squash called spaghetti squash, did you? Anyway, there are several recipes and pictures that will have you hitting the print button.
My own empirical research has concluded that cyclists enjoy burritos, but let's be clear, a burrito is not a sandwich. Thanks for clearing that up your Honor.
Erik Zabel on the track. I love this photo.
Back to food once again, specifically chocolate milk. I've written before about the wondrous benefits of chocolate milk after a hard workout, and I still recommend drinking a pint (or 2!) after a race or hard training. Who cares if this study was sponsored by the Dairy and Nutrition Council; what's important is they came up with results. Chocolate milk is a great recovery drink and definitely more cost effective. After extremely hard efforts I'll even add a few other ingredients to the milk, but that is a secret potion held closely like the Coke recipe.
Marian College in Indianapolis is developing an indoor cycling center. This is great for collegiate cycling and the Indy community, which already boasts the Major Taylor Velodrome.
Nashville needs a velodrome. Everyone has at some point either said those same words or at least thought about it. I have said this before too, always dream big.
Jiri Fischer says, "There must be a reason I'm still here." Jiri is the Detroit Red Wings hockey player who collapsed and suffered a seizure while playing the Predators last year. He's not playing hockey anymore, maybe never again, but he's reflecting and searching for answers. I read this article and in a lot of ways found myself relating to his situation.
Floyd Landis - Turkey of the Year #8, Sports Illustrated. Even Floyd couldn't outdo others like Terrell Owens, Albert Haynesworth or the #1 turkey Zinedine Zidane.
Some friends of mine are promoting and organizing this race next April in Fayetteville, Tennessee called Dirt Sweat and Gears. By the looks of it you can expect an epic event with a ton of money! That's always a good combination, but it does fall on the Athens Twilight/Roswell weekend. Maybe all you crazy mountain bikers looking for punishment will make the trip and come back with tales to tell.
On the one hand I understand the people of North Georgia being upset over the Tour de Georgia snub, but sooner or later these things always come down to $$$ and cents. The area of Lookout Mountain and city of Chattanooga stand to gain significantly, which is awesome for us Tennesseans. Either they made a big impression last year during the time-trial, or they both outbid those North Georgia towns to earn the right to host. I am a big believer in loyalty to those who helped build you, but it shouldn't come at the expense of potentially losing the Tour altogether.
Hopefully in years to come the TDG will add even more days than the extra one added this year.
Lastly, this comes from Evan Hyde of Vanderbilt, you MUST check out his blog about racing in Alaska during Thanksgiving. Evan just raced in an event called Nut Cracker, and when it was over the temperature was minus 6 degrees! Scroll through and check out their frozen faces after doing the 90 minute race on a frozen lake. What tha?! His holiday request, some Global Warming!
