STL bound - Labor Day

This is a big weekend for pedalcyclists!

Locally there's the Clarksville Labor Day Century on Saturday which usually pulls a huge crowd if the weather is good. I suspect 600 to 800 people will be there, but a small few will be attempting to break the 4 hour barrier. Their hope is to break last year's record of 3:53 for the century, but that requires having a lot of fire power. There were 11 super strong guys who pulled off this feat in 2005. I was recruited for this endeavor in 2006, but for the third time this year I am headed to the Gateway City, St. Louis!

I'll be racing at the Gateway Cup in STL for four days of fast criterium action. This annual event is widely known as the premier race weekend in the Midwest for top competitive action. The field sizes are large and teams from all over come to fight for the big prize money. While I've raced in STL several times before I have not done this specific event. It kicks off on Friday evening and wraps up on Labor Day.

Greenville, SC is hosting the USA Cycling Professional Championships for the road race and time-trial. The road race was moved from Philadelphia to Greenville this year, and is open only to Americans for the first time. Go HERE to see the road race start list, and go HERE to see the time-trial start list. The road race boasts Hincapie, Leipheimer and Zabriskie to name a few, while Zabriskie should be considered the man to beat in the time-trial.

On Labor Day Monday the annual US10k in Atlanta takes place. The pro women's race is only 10k while the pro men go for 100k. If I remember correctly last year NashvilleCyclist.com diarist Katharine Carroll took home 2nd place in the women's event! (Katharine, correct me if I'm wrong)

The weekend is rounded out by some mountain bike racing action at Chickasaw State Park. Saturday is the Return of Chickasaw TT while Sunday is the Return of Chickasaw Cross Country. The race is sponsored by Middle TN Velo, aka Team MOAB.

What am I forgetting?

Ok, well, what blog post would be complete without a wine update? I am finishing up two different bottles of Cabernet, one from Century Oak Winery from 2002 and another from Three Blind Moose in 2003. Century Oak wins this taste test.

My palate will be ready for Wine on the River - September 16.
