Pedaling for Pennies
These two Vanderbilt students impress me.
Riding across America in some form or fashion is becoming more and more common, but in each case it's usually for a great cause. Austin and Tom are riding 5,000 miles on behalf of the Rally Foundation to raise money for childhood cancer research.
Go HERE to view a video trailer about their endeavor.
I've received word they'll be wrapping up their tour on September 9th in Nashville with a bike ride from the Parthenon at 9:30 AM. It'll be a short out and back loop, but then ending with a party sponsored by Outback Steakhouse. I am confirming details at this time and will provide more info when I know more.
In the meantime review their Rally Across America website. Pay particular attention to the bios of the young kids affected by cancer. Odds are every one of you reading this has been or will be affected by cancer, directly or indirectly. To see a young kid go through the struggles of cancer, well, there may not be anything more heartbreaking.
For some reason this conjures up a ritual we had in college before every baseball game without fail. The entire team would come together, put one arm in the air in the center touching everyone, and pray a most simple prayer. In unison we prayed, "Thank you Lord for these arms and legs to play this game of baseball. We do our best. Also Lord, thank you for no serious injuries. Amen."
We recognized how fortunate we were to be healthy and playing a sport we dearly loved. That simple prayer set the tone and centered us for competition. That habit has stuck with me throughout all my years of athletic competition. Here I am, almost twice the age I was in college and still competing, but believe me, I am very aware how blessed I am to be able to do what I do.
Read some of the stories of those young kids. You too should feel blessed.
