Ride of Silence - Nashville

If you've paid attention to NashvilleCyclist.com lately then you should know about the Ride of Silence on Wednesday, May 16. The ride will leave from Centennial Park on West End Avenue at 7:00 PM.

Everyone on a bike is welcome to join this silent ride to honor those who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roads. It's a free ride for everyone. The only stipulations are that you must wear a helmet, ride no faster than 12 mph, and to not speak during the ride. Hand signals will be the mode of communication for the entire ride.

Last year was our first attempt at this ride, but I didn't get the word out until a few days in advance. Amazingly about 40 people showed up to participate, and everyone commented afterwards about how it positively affected them. I've had details on the site a little longer this year, so maybe we'll have a higher turnout. Regardless, it's an important event that I believe all riders should get behind. If you haven't been injured while cycling then there's a good chance you know someone who has been harmed while riding their bike.

As for me, well, I have been seriously injured by a vehicle. I am all too familiar with the pain, broken bones, surgeries, and life altering experiences that go along with such a traumatic moment. As difficult as that period was in my life I would not trade those experiences for anything in the world. I have mentioned this a few times before, but if not for my accident there would be no NashvilleCyclist.com. I can say that with 100% certainty. I don't dwell on this much at all, but it saddens me to think of all that I would have missed out on had I not been hit by that car. In other words, I am incredibly grateful for what happened and thankful for the opportunities it provided. Sadly, others across the country did not survive to enjoy the same.

Riding our bicycles should be a safe adventure. All of us grew up as little kids with a bicycle that offered us something we now take for granted. Bicycles still offer us that same unique thrill today as adults as it did when we were kids. The ultimate thrill. Freedom.

Please come out and support Ride of Silence Nashville 2007.
