Daily Dose - 5/16
So I have been withholding lately, yes, I am very aware. I've even been reminded by several others that my blogging skills have diminished. Every other sport has an off-season, so I reckon I've been going through mine. For now I will treat you with a delicious taste of randomness that I'd like to finally delete from my saved favorites in IE. Here goes.....
Antioxidants Don't Help You Live Longer
They actually found a correlation between taking vitamins and a higher risk of death! The study really doesn't say much good for an industry totaling $2.3 billion. The main highlight is it's suggested antioxidants are more effective if consumed in food rather than pills.
Give Us This Day Our Daily Supplements
Still more information leading us to believe all these supplements aren't producing the promised results by manufacturers. It's said that B-complex vitamins do nothing for athletes except make the wallet lighter. Isn't that what cyclists want, less weight? Personally, I do take a multi-vitamin that's designed for athletic men, but I don't load up on any other extras.
ConsumerLab.com
The article above led me to this website. I haven't paid the $27 subscription fee, but you can read headline links to their research. This company has found some products to not contain what's listed on the ingredients. Worse, some ingredients in the product were not listed on the label. Guess the ingredient. Oh, just lead. Great! You get teased into learning about things such as the effects of resveratrol, supplements for bone health, supplements for anti-aging, or problems with multi-vitamins. I wonder if my brand is on the list?
Old Mike, new Christine
I have no comment to add other than, best of luck Christine.
Nothing little about IU's Little 500
The Cutters are back on form. This is a great article from Jim Caple of ESPN.com. I knew the race was taken seriously, but not to these extents. Caple covers not only this year's event, but delves into the history of the Little 500 and the great bicycling movie Breaking Away.
Reynolds familiar with Floyd Landis' plight
This former world record holder in the 400m knows all too well what Floyd Landis is going through. Butch Reynolds tested positive for steroids in 1990, but was later vindicated by a federal judge who agreed his tests were botched by French labs. Reynolds' advice to Floyd at the end is the best I've heard anyone suggest thus far.
Hamilton, Jaksche suspended by cycling team
Add Danilo Hondo to the list too. Didn't we all expect this to happen eventually? Surely Tinkoff knew it was highly probable. How many controversial cyclists can one team sign anyway? There should be a limit on how many former dopers or accused dopers you can sign before embarrassing yourself and the sport.
Please stop Bonds, before it's too late
Then again, it didn't stop the San Francisco Giants did it? They signed him to a one-year contract banking on the likelihood of him breaking the most cherished record in baseball. Jemele Hill with ESPN.com writes outstanding opinions, and this is no exception. I agree with Jemele; Hank Aaron deserves more than to be passed in this manner. The next home run king of baseball should be just as worthy of the pedestal that Aaron is perched upon, but sadly Bonds does not live up to those standards in my opinion. If only Ken Griffey Jr. had stayed healthy.
Frog juice in high demand in Peru
Feeling a little sluggish before your next training ride? Hit up the froggie espresso bar for a pick-me-up!
May 6: Decatur Downtown Criterium
Michael Olheiser of Memphis Motowerks shows up at Highland Rim and gets second place in the Pro1/2 road race. The following day he drives down to Decatur, AL and puts on an impressive effort against all the top professional criterium riders. With 40 laps to go he's in a breakaway that sticks and ends up taking second place again. Great job!
Sutherland and Carroll victorious at Joe Martin
Olheiser was outdone by Nashvillian Katharine Carroll at this past weekend's Joe Martin Stage Race in Fayetteville, AR. Katharine brings home the women's overall GC victory trophy to Nashville this week to "...rest her soul." After winning this stage race along with winning Athens Twilight I'd say it's a well deserved break. Congrats!
