Not forgotten

I have been absent for quite some time, but I have thought of you each and every day. Miss me? I'll be honest, yes, I have missed you. Anyway, I have been a little busy in other areas lately that had to take priority. I have kept my finger on the pulse of the Internet to be able to share interesting news though.

Are you enjoying this weather? As fate would have it this week I am on a rest week! I pound myself these last few weeks out in the cold every day without much sunshine. Last Wednesday I did a 4.5 hour ride with zero sun, 25 degrees, and a feels like of something like 15 degrees. Those are the kinds of days when your inner motivation must take over, and mine reluctantly snapped me into gear.

If you look at our 10 day forecast it's more of the same. Was Punxsatawney Phil right?

These new bikes fit the 'super-size me' world
Everything else is super-sized, so why not bicycles? I say the more people riding a bicycle the better. The lady who came up with the idea had this great quote, "Hey, I'm not the only fat person who wants to ride a bike," Joan Denizot said. Love it.

The Days of Wine And Yoga
I say the more people drinking wine and yoga the better, but one should always drink responsibly. These niche ideas are great I think. Sure, the demand for this isn't huge, but one can make a nice living from supplying a niche service. If you think about it though, many combinations of hobbies or personal interests can be combined to form a viable market.

Updated Tour of California rosters - as of 2/15/07
The big Tour of California has already started and Levi Leipheimer is setting the pace so far. How about Jens Voigt yesterday? You could tell he was the strongest in the final breakaway long before the sprint. I wasn't surprised to see Chris Horner there either, but I was surprised to see he kept drifting off the pace after each pull. Obviously he's not on true form yet, but it's still unlike him to fall off the pace. I guess that goes to show how strong Leipheimer and Voigt are right now.

Ok, back to my original thought on providing this news link. Scroll to the bottom and read about the US Development Team that's participating in the ToC. For the next 10 years those are some of the names for you to pay attention to in US professional cycling.

If you remember over the holidays I blogged about Brent Bookwalter recently graduating from Lees-McRae College. He wrapped up what could be considered the most prolific collegiate career ever, but now he's setting his eyes on bigger prizes.

National Development Team set for USA Cycling Pro Tour opener
Another name to notice on the list racing at the ToC is another Lees-McRae College racer, Scott Stewart. I was unaware that Scott had been selected to be on the development team, but there's no question he's a very good bike racer. We'll be seeing him later this spring during our collegiate season in the Southeast. I'm sure he'll have some good stories to share after racing against the big boys.

Meet the 2007 USA Cycling National Development Team
What you may not know is that a Tennessean is on the squad as well. Spencer Beamer of Knoxville is on the team and recently participated in their team training camp in the Bahamas. The US Development Team and VMG Racing have partnered and have merged their squads for 2007. Former professional cyclist Chann McRae is an assistant. Since his retirement from professional cycling Chann has been competing in Ironman triathlons.

Sounds push stadium opening back to 2009
This does not break my heart. For you weekday criterium series lovers this will keep us in uninterrupted business through 2008. I had been worried if the park opened in 2008 that it would affect parking at LP Field, and subsequently eat into our race course.

Lascassas Road Race and Time Trial, March 17, 2007
Information is already posted for this upcoming race near Murfreesboro. Plus, online registration is available on BikeReg.com. A nice perk for those registering online is the promoter is paying the transaction fee. Note that there's a $5 late fee if you wait to register the day of the race, which would make the road race fee a whopping $40. Yeah, pre-register!
