Race #2 in the books
Last night was the second event of the NashvilleCyclist.com Criterium Race Series sponsored by Murfreesboro Outdoor and Bicycle.
Thank you to everyone who showed up to race or watch. We really enjoy putting this event on for all of you and hope that you will continue to support the series. This week's weather was awesome, racing was fun, and everyone managed to stay on two wheels with no accidents!
Our next race will be in two weeks on Wednesday, July 12th. We are taking next week off so everyone can fully enjoy the July 4th holiday with their family and friends. Results from last night are posted and the overall points series has been updated to reflect this last race. If anyone has trouble reading the Excel file then please email me and I'll explain how to decipher.
The stadium course continues to prove it's a breakaway venue as both races had riders win off the front. In the B race it was Burton Coleman of Cumberland Transit winning solo with a couple of chasers not far off. Many in the remaining field were shattered across the course. In the A race it was a two-man break with Torsten Lyon of Hart Bang Salon and Shawn Mullican of MOAB coming down to the last lap to determine the winner. Shawn attacked on the "clank!" lap at the start/finish, but Torsten countered after the "S" turns of four and five and went on to take the victory.
Momentum is building and more people are showing up to race and watch. The B field had the most depth as 31 riders were in that race. The A field was a bit sparse with only 11 toeing the line, but over the next month more of the upper category riders should be coming out.
During the months of July and August there aren't a lot of races on the calendar, but the Category 1/2/3 riders will want to test themselves and remain fit. Last summer the A category ended up having around 25 people showing up regularly, and I predict the same will happen this year too. This means spectators will be able to watch a pretty intense race where all the riders are more compact than in the B field. We've always been extremely happy with the B field participation, but there tends to be big gaps in abilities within that field. In the A category the Cat 3s are able to hold their own quite well against Cat 1s and 2s.
I also saw a lot of people taking pictures along the course, and I took a few myself that I posted this morning. If you took some photos then feel free to email me HERE at NashvilleCyclist.com and I'll get them posted for everyone's pleasure. I was stuck on the start/finish line and unable to venture out along the course. I'm sure some of you took much better shots than I did, not to mention your fancy camera is probably better than mine at taking action photos.
