The Leader of the Band

Once again the dust is settling and we're getting back into a regular rhythm here at NC.com. This past weekend was a huge success with the collegiate event in Watertown & downtown Nashville, and of course it appeared that everyone had a blast racing on Sunday afternoon in the Spring Training Criterium. We had a total of 99 total participants, which is a record for a training crit or crit series race, and I want to say thanks to all of you who participated. It was also exciting to see 13 kids come out and race in the Juniors only field! It's very motivating to see so many riders on so many different teams come out and compete.

I will have the results posted later today or tomorrow, so stay tuned. If you see any misspellings or irregularities then please email me. Our officials do a great job at placing everyone so I don't think that will be an issue, but I may make a typing mistake and/or have your team affiliation wrong.

One of the bigger motivators this weekend was how well the TTT and road race went in Watertown, TN. I think the course I picked out for both turned into great ones as many of the collegiate kids are begging me to do the same thing next year. The road race course is an 11 mile loop that's rolling with a lot of twists and turns, and all of it has excellent pavement. There's very little flat sections and requires focus at all times due to the undulations and constant bending around a curve in the road. In the future I may try and have some type of event staged in that same area, but it will all boil down to volunteers. If you're wondering why there are so many crits and time-trials on the TBRA schedule you can look no further than the volunteer manpower it takes to do a road race event. Crits and time-trials are much less demanding and easier logistically to pull off.

On to my IE favorites.....

Cup of Gold Snack Bars
If you aren't gobbling these up by now then you're missing out on a tasty treat. I'd rank them right up there with Clif Bars. You can find them in all the local bike shops now. The great thing is they are sold out of Franklin, TN!

Carroll wins from decisive break
Starting off the season in winning fashion is a great motivator don't you think? Katharine looks pretty excited in this finish line photo.....Kat, I think you should name the victory salute. Anyone have suggestions?

Victory Salutes
If anyone is needing some guidance on salute ideas then here's your dictionary to scroll through. It's missing the roar of the Lion King Mario Cipollini, but at least you have a variety to choose from. Personally I like the muddy kiss from Paris-Roubaix. What the sport is missing are victory salute props; you know, like touchdown artists. Cycling should have a Chad Johnson type from the Cincinnati Bengals or Terrell Owens of the Dallas Cowboys to show stage winners how to really show their joy. What could fit in their pockets that's lightweight yet an effective prop?

Redlands Bicycle Classic - Podium Photo
This will be a photo we see quite often this year and well into the future. Our very own Katharine Carroll placed 3rd overall down just 16 seconds while winning won one stage, congrats Kat! The other female phenom who will wreak havoc for many years to come is Mara Abbott; who placed 2nd overall just one second down in the overall GC. I've seen her race several times and she's got a gear that most other women simply don't have. Also, another Nashvillian placed in the top 20 as well. Robin Farina of Cheerwine helped to get two of her teammates to place in the top 10 overall. From what I understand Robin has stepped up her training and is full bore into the job at hand, and the result at Redlands speaks to her commitment.

An essay by 1984 Olympic gold medalist Alexi Grewal
These "essays" are becoming more common than the common cold. Though, it's posted online on April 3 and in the print edition on April 1. Hmmmm, no it's no joke. The real reason I'm posting this is because of a photo tip given to NC.com by TBRA photo extraordinaire/points extraordinaire Bill Parsons who quickly spotted a familar face in this photo of Grewal. Does the face over Grewal's right shoulder look familiar? Ok, maybe his face isn't familiar because you're always looking at his butt while you struggle to suck his wheel. It's none other than Dirk Pohlman.

April Fool's Day Means Good Times on the Internet
The things that people do to get attention and have fun. Come on, everybody knows if it's on the internet then it's got to be true! Personally, I loved the AFD joke Velonews had of "Carpenter and Phinney start new venture", which as you can imagine produced a lot of good emails to the editors. Only $250,000 for "undiluted" sperm or the egg, but a cool $1 million for both! A genuis idea actually, but how about someone thinking "yeah, I'd pay a million" when in fact they could buy separately and only pay $500,000. Now THAT'S the real joke! We here at the offices of NC.com are aware this AFD joke did pull it over on a few locals; see the message board for proof.

*Special Edition* Cycling News for April 1, 2008
Cyclingnews gets into the AFD action as well. Occasionally good ideas come from seeing just how goofy our thoughts can be. Personally I kind of like the TTT idea/AFD joke! Let's face it, the sport could use some policing when it comes to team names.

Speaking of NC.com message board
It's gaining steam and has a following. It's in need of an injection of fresh faces, ideas and chatter about the cycling community. It has been propped up on the backs of a few for too long, and I now encourage you to sign up and participate. There's a registration process that's simple and easy to complete. I then go into the admin section to approve your account and off you go. When you sign up please use a legitimate name and email because I delete many spam/porn requests that look suspicious.
