10 days to Christmas

I have not done one bit of Christmas shopping yet, zip, nada. I've still got three more weekend days to get it done, but usually I'm able to get it completed in just a few hours anyway. Targeted shopping is something I'm pretty good at, or at least ad lib well at the last second. Instead of shopping I am finally kicking up the training despite the elbows not exactly enjoying the long endurance rides. I've got my priorities straight!

Proposal For Changes In Mission & Structure Of TBRA
This is from two prominent club leaders here in Tennessee. I recommend reading it for yourself and sharing your thoughts in my comments section as well as on the TBRA forum. It's important that club officers and their respective members have the opportunity to agree or disagree with their assessment.

As for me, well, I am now in the position of sitting on the TBRA board as the Road Director of Tennessee. I'll reserve my comments about the letter after I have listened to more discussion from others outside of those who penned the letter. I think this document will bring about a lot of progressive discussion which will result in actions to improve the racing scene in Tennessee. Ultimately, improving the quality of racing and racing experience for riders in Tennessee is everyone's goal. How we achieve that goal exactly is yet to be completely agreed upon, but we will have the discussions to take us there.

2007 USA Cycling National Championships
I think it's important to look back and recognize the success of Tennessee cyclists at the national level. Not only have many of our riders been highly successful regionally, but they've accomplished incredible things at the national and international level as well. National Champions include junior riders Ben Gabardi and Nathan Brown from the Memphis area while Knoxville had three National Champions - Kent Bostick, Dirk Pohlman and G. Turner Howard III. These are remarkable achievements and ones that all Tennesseans should be proud of.

At the international level Dirk Pohlman of Krystal and Michael Olheiser (Huntsville, AL) of Memphis Motowerks achieved great results at masters road worlds in Austria. Olheiser won the gold medal in the 30-34 world time-trial while Pohlman took home the silver in the 40-45 road race.

It's great to be the best locally, but to go and compete nationally to become the best is even sweeter. Then to hop on a plane and prove to be the best or one of the best of all the planet is incredible. So next time you're sucking their wheel in a race at least take comfort in knowing countless others have tried and suffered the same fate!

Gallatin greenway project stays on track
Good news for cyclists in the Gallatin area.

Colorado Premier Training
Check out photos of Tom Danielson and Slipstream in the wind tunnel in Fort Collins. Plus, a video of David Millar and David Zabriskie during their visit. If you've got deep pockets and looking for a coach then check out their coaching section for the platinum program.

Coach speak: A conversation with Rick Crawford
If the platinum program appeals to you then ask for Rick Crawford. This link is from a good Q&A he had with Velonews a few years ago. He's coached Lance Armstrong, Chan McRae, Tom Danielson and Shonny Vanlandingham. He also leads the Fort Lewis College Cycling team. I've seen his collegiate team up close for the last few years dominating at road and mountain bike nationals.

Cycling Center
Evan Hyde, Vanderbilt grad and member of the NashvilleCyclist.com powered by Bike Pedlar team, has been selected to join an elite rider development program in Belgium. Many Americans have participated in this program over the years and moved on to professional success. For those who want to experience racing in Belgium and Europe this is a great introduction. Hyde is a Vanderbilt University graduate attending graduate school at the University of Arizona.

We are adding a new racing team to the scene here in the Nashville area. The more teams the better! Also, check out Clarke's blog for another view of cycling to help you put things into perspective.

Counting Calories? Big Meals Make It Tough
Eat a small meal and get the calorie count just about right, or eat large and not even be in the ballpark. Studies are even showing that skinny people are better at estimating calories than overweight people. Doc's suggestion? When sitting down to a large meal assume the caloric count is twice what you think it to be. That's a lot of multiplication and addition during huge Christmas dinners.

5-year-old descendant of Davy Crockett kills bear
Oh it's a sports story alright! If it's good enough for ESPN.com then it's good enough for NC.com. I don't understand the boy's father questioning the legitimacy of Davy's kill at 3 years old though. We're talking Davy Crockett here! Here may be my favorite quote of the year: "I said, 'Tre, you missed the bear,' " Mike Merritt said. "He said, 'Paw-paw I squeezed the trigger and I didn't close my eyes. I killed him."'
