12 Step Program
"Hi, my name is NashvilleCyclist, and I am a wine-a-mocha-holic." I had to make that sad admission to myself after five weeks off the bike and many glasses of wine and grande mochas. To prove to myself there is more to NashvilleCyclist than beverages I decided to commit myself to healthier living. Therefore, let the record state that I have not had one glass of wine or one soy mocha since last Sunday. Six days! I have yet to develop any shivers or shakes, but I am still not sure this makes me a better cyclist.
I think the least I can do is blog a little since I am not yet hitting the road for three hour rides, and not spending time in coffee shops or wine bars. This week has been a big week so far for me though. Due to the broken elbows I have been off the bike entirely for just over five weeks, but this week I have logged a whopping 4.5 hours! I'll probably add a couple more hours before the weekend is up, but this is a huge week for me. I did start back doing pilates a few weeks sooner though, and oh does that feel relieving.
On to more interesting stuff.....
Tour of Arkansas Bike Race
In case you hadn't heard there's another state Tour happening in 2008. Tri-Peaks and the Celebrity Classic are combining for this 350 mile and 23,000 feet of climbing event. Get your 39/25 ready. This means the Joe Martin Stage Race and the Tour of AR are on back-to-back weekends.
Raisin won't race
I was disappointed to read the news that Saul Raisin won't be returning to professional cycling. The doctors for team Crédit Agricole have decided the risk was too great for Saul to possibly re-injure brain if he were to crash. Says Saul, "I am no longer Saul Raisin, cyclist professional for the team Crédit Agricole. I am now Saul Raisin, brain injury survivor....." I will continue to watch his website to see what path he takes from here. Certainly he's got a platform and opportunity to facilitate change, so let's wish him well.
IAAF annuls results, asks Jones to return prize money
The price of cheating is high. Lose your gold medals and have to return all your winnings. Plus, her relay teammates have to return their medals as well. You think they're happy with Marion Jones? I am not going to let things like this or Barry Bonds or Floyd Landis get me down on professional sports though.
The performance is still there and speaks for itself, which ultimately means I get to see something I have never seen before. If I questioned the performance every time then I might as well turn off the TV. I am as much a realist as anyone out there, but on some level we have to be slightly naive to enjoy sports. What's galling is how some people will look at a sport like cycling and castigate it, but then have no problem happily cheering on the NFL or MLB. You can't have it both ways unless your head is deeply buried in the sand.
BREITBART.TV VIDEO CHANNEL
I met Scott and Liz while visiting Adam in California a couple of weeks ago. They scour the Internet for 18 to 20 hours a day for interesting and off-the-wall video news items, and then post them for all of us to see. Keep an eye on it and you'll get to see some funny stuff.
Rasmussen: I kinda, sorta lied... but not really
The next headline I think we'll read about Rasmussen is that his wife is divorcing him. It sounds like being dishonest in his personal life may be what started the whole thing. Even little while lies can be your unraveling.
Will Bicycling to Work Get You Killed?
This blog throws out some thoughts on the safety of walking to work versus cycling, and also asks others to chime in on the helmet issue. So far it's garnered 278 comments. I have three busted helmets myself that say helmet use saved me from serious injury each time, maybe even more. If you aren't going to wear your helmet you could at least sign your license stating you're an organ donor.
In Portland, Cultivating a Culture of Two Wheels
A cycling city worth emulating. They have the largest percentage of workers commuting to work by bicycle, a whopping 3.5%, and it's estimated 600 to 800 people are some how employed through cycling related businesses.
As usual, I read something that gets my interest and it leads me to a bunch of other links. Here's where this led me.....
Laek House
They've got some cool t-shirts.
Little Package Cycling Caps
A custom cycling cap company in Portland, but they also sell some that are pre-made.
The Pornography of the Bicycle
If you don't have an open-minded sense of humor then stay away from this link. However, if you do prepare to spend a lot of time bouncing around through this site. Don't say I didn't warn you.
Ok, so enough about Portland.....
Bike surfing
A new form of racing for our summer crit series?
Bike jousting
Or, would you rather win the championship belt for this?
