Race Across America

On Sunday, June 11th the Race Across America (RAAM) begins in Oceanside, CA with the finish line in Atlantic City, NJ. The solo competitors take off first on the 3,052 mile adventure across the country with the team competitors starting on Tuesday.

In my opinion, the RAAM is by far the most grueling competition on the planet. Top solo racers finish in eight or nine days, which considering the task is unbelievable. Riders are literally on their bikes for over 20 hours each day suffering through every imaginable physical and mental situation possible.

This year's team edition has a local connection as former Nashvillian Tristen Grant is part of team B2B Divas/Vail Beaver Creek. B2B appropriately stands for Border 2 Border, and their goal is to raise funds for pediatric HIV/AIDS research through adventure bicycle rides. The B2B Divas have won their division for the last two years and expect to win again in 2006.

Tristen recently moved to Sacramento, CA after living here for a few years. She's known to tackle an ambitious adventure like RAAM after competing as a runner, triathlete, rock climber, adventure racing, endurance races, etc. You name it and Tristen has probably conquered it!

We're hoping Tristen has email and/or internet access during the race so she can provide some diaries. At the least we hope to get a good recap from her once she's hopped off her bike in Atlantic City.
