Weekend thoughts.....

Here are a few tidbits of news items and happenings to chew on for this weekend.

While many of you will be at the Raccoon Mountain Road Race I will be in Banner Elk, North Carolina as Cumberland competes in races held by Lees-McRae College. There will be a lot of mountain climbing in the race with us enjoying the view of Sugar Mountain.

Cyclysm Sundays are back on OLN and this weekend they will show highlights of Sunday's classic, The Hell of the North, Paris-Roubaix. Remember a few years ago when OLN showed this race live on Sunday morning? I miss those days, especially now that Hincapie and his Discovery team have a distinct chance to win.

Now that OLN has scaled back their coverage of races live on television they have teamed up with Cycling.tv to provide LIVE streaming video of the Giro d'Italia. You can get Monday-Saturday access commercial free for only $19.95 as Sundays will be covered by OLN on television. As far as intense action and drama goes the Giro gets my vote as the most exciting stage race to watch, so I will probably pony up the money. Let's face it, the only reason I have Comcast is for cable internet and OLN. I might as well redirect some funds and pay for what I want the most.

TIAA-CREF team director Jonathan Vaughters gives Cyclingnews a look into the future plans of the development squad. The ultimate goal is to reach Pro Tour status in 2009. The article is loaded with a wealth of information about plans for the team, which aside from the Pro Tour ambitions is still very lofty. If you're going to dream, dream BIG.

The dispute at USA Cycling regarding the departure of Gerard Bisceglia continues. Cyclingnews has more information, but we still lack the clarity to understand why this happened. If you're like me and paid $60 for a USCF license then you deserve an explanation, but clubs (like myself) also paid $150 for club status. When the masses are sending money to Colorado for this affiliation there must be greater accountability for actions taken, and with that accountability comes an honest explanation of those actions. The cloak and dagger approach is wrong and hints at bigger inside problems that membership is unaware of.

Stage racing is growing here in Tennessee, but the Tour of Ohio has been going on for years. Several riders from this area have done it and have raved about how fun and exciting it was. The year the Pro 1/2/3 event is June 27-July 1, while the remaining categories are July 1-4. Someday.....

The Ford Tour de Georgia isn't far away as it begins April 18. The rosters were announced recently as Americans will get another chance to watch their favorite professionals tear up the roads of Georgia. Check out the different stages HERE in order to plan your trip south. I am considering going down to watch the end of Stage 2 in Rome and then wrap up my viewing with the ITT which ends in Chattanooga.

SRAM finally unveiled their new groupsets at Sea Otter. SRAM had been slowly leaking details until now, and if you remember Jesse Lawler of Jittery Joe's was secretly testing the prototypes last season. There are two levels, the pro group called Force and a more economical group called Rival. The groups will be priced competitively at the level of Dura-Ace and Ultegra, respectively. The Cyclingnews review is thorough with a lot of pictures.

That's enough for now....enjoy the weekend!
