The Little 500
Hopefully everyone has seen the movie Breaking Away, the cycling movie where Dave Stoller is engrossed with everything Italian and bike racing. The main plot revolves around Dave and a few of his local Bloomington friends who race against the college boys in the annual Little 500.
There are a lot of funny scenes throughout this 1979 flick, but my favorite is Dave's father repeating "Refund!" over and over again after Dave made his dad return a carbuyer's money. Another memorable scene is when Dave races against his favorite Italian team Cinzano, breaks away with them, only to have them crash him out of the race! Did you realize this movie won an Oscar?
Who could ever forget the Cutters? Well, the Cutters are still hard it after gaining fame in the movie. The Cutters won the race in 2004 after a disqualificiation of the winner for not holding his line in the sprint. Check out their official site and bookmark it since the site is still under development. They plan to sell shirts from the site, which I would imagine will become quite popular.
All this to say the Little 500 is just a few weeks away. The women's event takes place on April 21st, while the men's race is on April 22nd. This intramural event is over 50 years old, attracts 20,000 spectators, and provides a rich history on the campus of Indiana University.
The official Little 500 website is loaded with great information, but the most impressive thing is the 2005 race video is availabe to watch!
The video quality is outstanding, 2 hours 14 minutes worth, and boasts Dylan Casey as one of the announcers. The atmosphere you see in this video is exactly what you watched in the movie Breaking Away. I cannot emphasize enough, watch this video!
After watching the video I am now adding attending the Little 500 to my "Life's To Do List."
