Boonen too much at Worlds

All the attention leading up to the Worlds RR on Sunday had been focused on Alessandro Pettachi and Robbie McEwen, but Belgian Tom Boonen captured the rainbow jersey with a dedicated team behind him.

Boonen's anaylsis of the race from Cyclingnews.

Not that Boonen wasn't a superstar before, but this 24 year old World Champion certainly has the right perspective on "team." However, another sprinter sounds a little bitter in that same news link, Robbie McEwen.

It is me, or does his comments come across as the pot calling the kettle black? How many sprint victories has McEwen stolen without his team working on the front? The Australians and Italians simply could not control the race at the end. It built up to become a sprint the whole race, but there wasn't a solid train leading into the finaly kilometers.

I'm guessing Robbie is more upset the Italians weren't able to set up Petacchi properly so he could fly by and snatch a victory. The Italians pulled it off beautifully a few years ago for Cipollin with a solid blue lead out for the jersey, but it wasn't to be this year for the Italians.
