Worlds on Sunday

If you haven't been paying attention lately you should know that the World Championships are taking place this Sunday in Madrid. There are races in different disciplines leading up to the men's race which is 273k long. A war of attrition and lots of luck.

Petacchi and McEwen are two of the favorites for Italy and Australia respectively, but Boonen from Belgium may have a say about that. The Italians usually rally around one leader and devote themselves, but the Aussie may have a harder time pulling that off. McEwen is probably the best sprinter at using the trains of other teams and winning though. Boonen is one of the strongest overall riders in the peloton, especially over long distances, but lacks the explosiveness of the two favorites.

Unfortunately we don't have any TV coverage, but live reports can be found on Cyclingnews.com. If you've never followed a race live online you're missing out. It's not as boring as you might imagine. The reporters usually provide a lot of quotes and interesting behind the scene stories about what's happening.

Keep up with Sunday's race HERE on Cyclingnews.com.

To the winner goes the coveted rainbow jersey for the 2006 season. What is your prediction?

And with this report are they going to change anything to make pedestrian/cycling activities safer? Add shoulders to roads perhaps? Think of all the great roads to ride in Brentwood and Nashville that have absolutely no shoulder and traffic that thinks 50-60mph is the speed limit. Add to it the fact that they feel they can just pass you no matter if there is oncoming traffic or not and the situation compounds itself. Tennessee drivers are arrogant and uninformed. Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and other western states allow cyclists on the interstate, all have strict laws about yeilding to pedestrians and have culture built around pedestrian travel. It's a driver education and city planning problem, one that I don't see Nashville correcting anytime soon.
