Nashville Ped and bike deaths up

The Tennessean has an article today about the increase in fatalities for pedestrians and bicyclists in Nashville in 2005. It goes on to say this increase goes against the 21% decrease in overall traffic fatalities. The stories I've read lately are about people either walking across the interstate or riding their bike on the interstate, both obvious illegal activities.

Not to be crass, but a pedestrian or bicyclist have no business on the interstate and are asking for a death sentence if they do make that attempt.

A few weeks ago as I drove into downtown at 5:45 AM on I-40 and Fesslers I came upon slowed and stalled traffic. This type of slowdown never happens that early, but it was due to a pedestrian who had been hit and killed. I drove by and saw the covered body in the middle lane. A pretty sobering site, but it left me shaking my head. Why? The Fesslers exit was 100 yards away and would have provided a safe crossing.
