Two Down, Seven to Go
Check out the latest news item about the NashvilleCyclist.com Criterium Race Series and catch up on all the exciting details. If you've been out to either of the first two race Wednesdays then you're aware how big this series is becoming. With two races complete you still have seven big nights to look forward to, and I for one cannot contain my enthusiasm for each and every race.
Lately I've spent more time thinking back to our first year in 2005 when we had just three races that summer, and the initial boost of energy it brought to the racing scene here in Nashville. In 2006 we grew to nine total races, but with only an "A" and "B" field it really limited our net in order to capture more riders into the fold. Here we are in 2007 with an additional "C" field and participation is going higher and higher.
There are two things that stand out to me and I discuss those two issues with everyone interested in the series.. First, I make sure to get the word out there at how huge the response has been to the "C" field. When I came up with the idea and acted on it my gut told me it would be a wise investment of time, but not in my wildest imagination did I think we would attract field sizes of over 30! Secondly, I follow up and do my best to describe the difficulty of the "A" race intensity, speed and suffering. The "A" field is on full throttle the entire race and has yet to sit up and relax for more than 100 meters. I'm not one of those into bragging about just how high average speeds or average watts are, but after comparing numbers it's obvious that 2007 is on another level compared to the past.
Here's my next idea; doping controls! Ha, just kidding. Today I received a message from someone saying the same thing about the average speed of the "B" field, and it was a whopping 2.5mph faster than last year. Now don't let all this scare you away since it's due to larger fields with a greater depth of talent. It's only natural when you get big fields of similar abilities together they're going to race faster than a smaller group of less than similar abilities. The best part of all this is that those of us who are racing will go on to become much stronger bike racers.
How does the saying go? "If you want to go faster you have to go faster."
I mention this each week of racing, but please show your appreciation to Murfreesboro Outdoor and Bicycle, Bike Pedlar, OS and Team MOAB. Without our sponsor's support we would not have the level of success we have today, so go by and shake their hands, buy some product, pat them on the back, and give them a hearty "thank you!"
Next Wednesday, June 27th please come out and tell all your friends about the Racing Clinic being held at 5:30 PM before the races begin. Nashvillian and USA Cycling certified coach Todd Nordmeyer will hold a 30 minute clinic on the topic of cornering through turns during a criterium. Mastering the art of cornering at high rates of speed is something that doesn't come naturally for most, but with some instruction time and lots of practice you'll be way ahead of the competition. The clinic is $5. You must have an annual USA Cycling license or purchase a one-day license to participate in the clinic.
See you next week, June 27th!
