Belcourt cyclist movie

I found this in my email tonight and wanted to share it with you before the show stops playing. The Belcourt Theatre here in Nashville is playing "Death of a Cyclist" on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This 1955 Spanish film is less about cycling and more about guilt and the divide between the privileged and poor.

To learn more about the film and its director Juan Antonio Bardem go HERE to Turner Classic Movies. Bardem used his films to depict are more realistic view of life under the dictatorship of Francisco Franco. Bardem was such a hit with the dictator that he was imprisoned no less than seven times under Franco.

Death of a Cyclist was good enough to win the International Critics Award at the 1955 Cannes Film Festival. Unfortunately, Bardem could not accept the award because, you guessed it, he was in prison for his political beliefs.
