The vacation countdown
The countdown has begun to my official 2006 summer vacation. On Friday, August 11th I am flying out to California to visit a good friend in the Napa Valley area. His family owns Century Oak Winery, established in 2000 at Acampo, CA. It's about 35 minutes south of Sacramento and 75 minutes southeast of Napa Valley.
My friend, Adam Housley, is an international news correspondent with FOX News. If you've ever watched the national news station then you've likely seen him reporting from all across the globe. His latest trip was to Seoul, South Korea to report on the nuclear missile crisis involving North Korea. When he's not traveling abroad Adam is very much involved with the family business. They've become quite passionate about their wine business and have secured distribution throughout the US.
Admittedly I am not much of a wine drinker, but he has bugged me for years to come out and visit. Well, each year Adam and his family welcome friends to participate in their annual summer bottling party. Everyone literally chips in and helps to bottle the wine that's aged to perfection and ready to distribute. It's an all day party with food and fun, and of course a few glasses (or bottles!) of vino to keep you hydrated!
Here's how it works.....
According to Adam there are very few wineries in the Napa region who have the ability to bottle their own wine. Instead they use independent companies to help bottle the wine, and that's done through the use of mobile bottling facilities. These companies drop off a huge semi-trailer that's loaded with a bottling production line inside. They are able to pump the wine from the winery and into the trailers, bottle it up and cork it!
In order to achieve this they invite everyone to chip in and participate. For all I know it's difficult work, but on the surface this sounds like a blast! You can bet I'll have the digital camera with me taking pictures left and right. Hopefully I'll have internet access so I can post quickly and rub it in that I am in California and you're not. :)
