Daily Dose - 6/26

Here are a few ramblings while I gather my thoughts on a few other topics.....

He's SAFE!
This isn't exactly how you want to cross the finish line in victory, but I'm sure he'll take it anyway. Every baserunning coach will tell you that you'll get there faster by not going head first! The winner said his hands slipped off the bars as he crossed the line because he wasn't wearing gloves. Personally, I think you're crazy for not wearing gloves in a crit, but to each his own. I love the look on Freddie Rodriguez's face the left, or how about the winner's teammate in the background with his mouth wide open as he sits up, "doh!" I'm even more curious about what looks to be another crash on the far right in the background, but I haven't found anything related to that one.

Laura Van Gilder takes final sprint ahead of Katharine Carroll
Maybe the guy above should take some sprinting lessons from Laura and our very own NashvilleCyclist.com diarist Katharine Carroll. This sprint shot is from the Nature Valley GP a few weeks ago. Note that both are smartly wearing gloves in the rain.

US Women's Cycling Development Program diary
Katharine writes up a diary with Cyclingnews and what we find is that she's of course got a super-duper wine bottle opener......something every pro rider should have in their bag.

Nashvillecyclist.com pulls through in an eight man breakaway
Our favorite Guatemalan rolls through a break at the Tour of Ohio last week. If you've followed TrueSport results or Cyclingnews race report updates then you know our squad had a good week and made some headlines, albeit some not so good headlines. I'll explain that more later because I was going to write up a blog about our five day stage race experience.

NashvilleCyclist.com secures collegiate jersey
After the breakaway was caught Alejandro still managed to capture 3rd place in the crit and was awarded the collegiate rider leader jersey. The promoter awarded a collegiate leader jersey for those kids who also race for collegiate teams, which was fought for just as hard as the yellow jersey. He got to wear the jersey in the final stage but unfortunately lost it on the last stage to Bennett van der Genugten of Inferno (also, a former Cumberland Univ. rider).

Skins.net
While in Ohio I saw several Inferno guys wearing this gear before and after races. I asked about it and its benefits, and I have found out enough that I'll be buying it for its recovery benefits. There are many different types of clothing you can get, but for us I think the tights would be most beneficial. The Inferno guys swore by it and from the looks of their racing it certainly helped.

Americans Drive Less, More Efficiently
Told ya', the whole conserve and slow down movement is catching on. Sooner or later a leader will step forward and actually say and promote the unthinkable, "it's time to slow down, conserve and get by on less."

Car-Free Streets, a Colombian Export, Inspire Debate
No debate needed. Let's start importing today. What a great idea! City planners for future generations should be jumping on this; especially since gasoline will be $20 per gallon with wages still at 1990 levels!

42-mile bicycle commute
This guy gets it. He's saving his family over $400 a month. That is what I call making a difference.

Psychedelic Furs - Pretty In Pink
So which would you rather choose on your team? Molly Ringwald or this pink biker girl? Tough decisions I know. One of the best concerts I ever witnessed was a combo one night at the old 328 Performance Hall on 4th Ave South. First up was The Ocean Blue followed by the Psychedelic Furs, wow, and one of those nights you wished they'd just keep on playing.

Alternative to skins:
Compression hose (can be knee high, or thigh high)
Pros:
1.Can buy them at any Walgreens/CVS type of store
2. Cost ~ 50.00 (white or tan)
3. Enhance circulation, prevent blood clot; recommended by any ortho/surgeon/PT for improving circulation esp for patients with circulatory problems, edema, patients s/p hip/knee replacement.
4. recommended for prolonged periof of travel in seated position (car/airplane) for anyone
Cons:
1. not as fancy as "skins"
2. do not have a top part (which may be a "pro" as well)
3. quite hard to put on; should fit really snug to produce desired effect
