Random thoughts.....
Here are some short ruminations off the top of my head.....
I still don't think Floyd Landis is the kind of leader to build a team around. He had an awesome time-trial in California that destroyed everyone else's hope for GC, but that doesn't make him a leader. It only shows his fitness against the clock is ahead of everyone else right now......
Tom Boonen got shut out this weekend at Het Volk and this other race I cannot pronounce on Sunday, but in the aforementioned unpronounceable event he covered attacks to help his Quick.Step teammate Nick Nuyens to victory.....
The Vanderbilt & Cumberland racing weekend is only four weeks away. The flyers are completed and will be posted within the next day or so. The collegiate races are the first ones off the block as the USCF training races start slightly later in early afternoon. There will be a road race on Saturday and criterium on Sunday with an A and B group for each one.....
I finally got the Blue Logger GPS to track me during my ride today. Afterwards I downloaded the route into my laptop. Fascinating toy, but now I have to learn the mapping software programs to create the cool maps we all want.....
Daniel Matheny is leading a mountain bike ride this Wednesday at Montgomery Bell. It starts at 5 PM and will last for 1.5 hours. I'll post more details on the main site later.....
I got an email from Robin Farina down in New Zealand. She won a criterium on Saturday night as a warmup to the Tour of New Zealand which starts on March 1st.....
How could I forget about Bode Miller? I should devote an entire blog post about the difference between an athlete that competes the right way versus the Bode way. Americans can accept an Olympian not bringing home a medal, but nobody from any country accepts an unapologetic and shameful lack of effort. What's even more strange is he keeps talking himself into a more disgraceful position. Sad.....
Then there is Apolo Anton Ohno to renew your faith. I followed the short track racing more than any other event for the speed and positioning battles. It's nothing more than a crit on ice, and I love crits! Back to Ohno, he did it the right way.....
Cumberland University's collegiate racing season begins this coming weekend at Georgia Southern in Statesboro, Georgia. The following two weeks we go to Georgia Tech and Florida State before the races here in Nashville.
I am hoping for some warm sun down in Tallahassee.....

On Bode...
I've totally become a Bode Miller fan through these Olympics. Not a fan of how he’s covered in the press, but a Bode Miller fan.
I loved what he said after his fifth place finish in the downhill. Something to the effect that he skied his best run--couldn't imagine doing any better--so why should he be disappointed that four people did better?
I love that.
I don't so much love that Nike is commercializing his competitive ethic, but we could definitely use a lot more of sport-for-sport's-sake philosophy in our culture rather than the esteem-crushing sport-for-winning's-sake philosophy that dominates.
Especially in amateur athletics.
Would that all our athletes were as self-assured and high-minded.
The problem, as I see it, is that the expectations the press assumes we have of Bode conflict with the expectations Bode has of himself. That’s not Bode’s problem, it’s ours. www.joinbode.com

i gotta disagree about bode....my problem with him is that he doesn't respect his own talent. as someone who has lived an athletic life trying to squeeze every last drop of performance out of what little talent i have, it chafes me to see him squander his. further, i think that the olympics deserve more respect than he has given them...
as for floyd, i'm more surprised that teams are willing to bet on levi-at least floyd has shown that he has the motor to compete in the mtns in the 3rd week of the tour. levi is dangerously close to becoming the american christophe moreau....
Patrick...
Your comment got me to doing some research because my gut reaction was I disagreed with your assessment of Levi's talent.
After typing in a crazy long reply I realized it was blog worthy. So instead of you being the only one to read my comment response everyone can read the post. :)
