Future crit woes.....
If you've been following the news lately then you know the Nashville Sounds are hoping to build a new downtown stadium at the old thermal plant site. Metro Council has passed approval of the stadium plan twice with a final third vote due next month. If the plan is ultimately approved the contractors can begin work immediately as the Sounds plan to start playing in the new stadium in April 2007.
Read this Q & A about details of the plan HERE.
Personally, I think the stadium would be awesome to have and look forward to having season tickets. I spent 18 years of my life in that sport, so I'm for its progress and happy the Sounds have a chance to leave Greer Stadium. If you have ever been in Memphis' downtown stadium you have an idea of what Nashville is striving towards. However (ie woes), the Sounds are needing affordable parking and have turned to the Metro Sports Authority to get approval to use the Titans Coliseum lots.
The stadium's capacity will be approximately 12,000 people total. Because of the limited land location the Sounds aren't able to offer any parking at the stadium site. The Sounds are expecting to average 8,000 fans per game, and want to be able to offer approximately 2,000 parking spaces.
With 72 home games during a season it will definitely put a damper on the NashvilleCyclist.com criterium series on Wednesday nights. Let's suppose the stadium was built and fans were parking at the Titans Coliseum this year. The first open Wednesday June date would be the 21st with three more dates in July and August respectively for a total of seven opportunities.
Not exactly what we all would hope for, but we would find a way to make up for our losses. I'd be disappointed in losing the consistency of racing on most Wednesday evenings, but at that point I would consider doing two nights in one week a couple of times during the summer. It would mean having races on nights other than Wednesday, and could encourage us to have more weekend races if nothing else is on the schedule.
Don't think for one second this speed bump is going to deter or hinder us from racing in 2007. We'll find a way to make this work.
